Ethereum's Dencun Upgrade: Cheaper Layer 2s Are Here
What is the Dencun Upgrade?
Dencun is the latest major upgrade for the Ethereum network, combining the “Deneb” and “Cancun” updates. Its centerpiece is EIP-4844, also known as “proto-danksharding.” This innovation introduces a new way for Layer 2 (L2) rollups to post data to the Ethereum mainnet more efficiently and cheaply.
The Magic of “Blobs”
Instead of using costly CALLDATA for transaction data, L2s can now use “blobs.” These are large, temporary data packets that are cheaper to post on-chain. While the data in blobs is only available for a short period (a few weeks), it’s long enough for L2 nodes to verify the transactions.
The result? Transaction fees on popular L2s like Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base are expected to drop by over 90%. This makes using decentralized applications (dApps) on these networks significantly more affordable, paving the way for mass adoption.
Impact on the Ecosystem
Lower fees unlock new possibilities for developers and users, from high-frequency DeFi trading to more complex on-chain gaming. The Dencun upgrade solidifies Ethereum’s role as a secure settlement layer while empowering L2s to handle the bulk of user activity at scale. It’s a critical step in Ethereum’s rollup-centric roadmap.
